Industry doom overstated?
Article Abstract:
The number of pharmaceutical detailers may be shrinking, but they are not an obsolete cog in the industry's marketing scheme. Pharmaceutical companies are merely cutting numbers to compete more effectively and to keep pace with the changing marketing approaches dictated to them by the increasing number of managed-care facilities. Where there are no managed-care facilities the detailer is still needed by the physician to answer questions and provide detailed technical information about the company's drugs.

Reinventing the detailer
Article Abstract:
The pharmaceutical industry is training its sales representatives to offer physicians more clinical information about drugs. Drug company representatives of the future will offer in-depth clinical information about drugs in consultations that are directed at meeting physician's needs based on managed care affiliations and patient base and detailed information about drugs and their formularies. Drug company reps of the future will act more as consultants to physicians than a sales rep.
