Information metaphors and the Human Genome Project
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Prjoect (HGP) needs to change the way it communicates with the public. Environmental factors have as much to do as genes with what makes us human and this needs to be acknowledged, as does the fact that humanness is a process of constant change. Genetics contributes to a sense of biological determinism and this also needs to be viewed with caution.

Permanent correction of an inherited ectodermal dysplasia with recombinant EDA
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that treatment with a recombinant protein can correct permanently a developmental genetic defect namely the ectodermal dysplasia. Treatment of pregnant mice with the recombinant protein, capable of generating ectodysplasin A protein, confers Tabby phenotype in the offspring.

A calcium signaling defect in the pathogenesis of a mitochondrial DNA inherited oxidative phosphorylation deficiency
Article Abstract:
Mitochondrial DNA defects that affect calcium metabolism can produce different diseases. In a study of myoclonic epilepsy with ragged-red fibers (MERRF) and neurogenic muscle weakness, ataxia and retinitis pigmentosa (NARP), calcium homeostasis was abnormal in MERRF, but not NARP cells.
