AMA wants role in evolving system for billing payers
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) is setting standards to regulate electronic claims filing by physicians. It has formed the National Uniform Claim Committee to develop standards governing the nature, definition and coding of medical information to be included on claims filed electronically. The AMA believes such standards are increasingly necessary as more physicians and health insurance carriers start employing electronic claims filing systems.

Not enough chiefs
Article Abstract:
Chief information officers (CIOs) have become important with the advent of information technology in the mid-1980s. Information systems have increased from 2.7% of health organization budgets in 1992 to 4.5% in 1995, and the average CIO budget has increased from $3.1 mil in 1987 to $8.1 mil in 1996. There is insufficient physician input, however, and CIOs who are physicians with information system expertise face both challenges and frustrations.
