Antibody to Mycobacterium tuberculosis 65 kDa heat shock protein in patients with rheumatoid arthritis - a survey of antigen-specific antibody isotypes and subclasses in an endemic area of previous tuberculosis infection
Article Abstract:
Immune reactions to tuberculosis may not be involved in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Researchers compared the immune response caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) 65kDa heat shock protein (hsp) in 30 RA patients, 15 patients with Reiter's disease, 15 patients with gouty arthritis, 27 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, and 30 healthy volunteers. IgG and IgA antibodies to the M.tb 65 kDa hsp protein were not significantly higher in RA patients compared with TB patients and healthy people. The role of anti-M.tb antibodies in RA is especially suspect considering that antibodies were found in the healthy volunteers. In addition, anti-M.tb 65 kDa hsp antibodies may not be indicators of RA disease activity. The study was conducted in Taiwan, an area where TB is prevalent and where newborns are vaccinated.

Prevalence of beta2-glycoprotein I antibody in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with beta2-glycoprotein I dependent antiphospholipid antibodies
Article Abstract:
Many patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) appear to have beta2-glycoprotein I (GPI)-dependent antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). aPLs are believed to be antibodies to phospholipid GPI. They are also believed to be responsible for complications of SLE and antiphospholipid syndrome such as recurrent miscarriage and venous thrombosis. Blood samples from 36 SLE patients were analyzed. Twenty SLE patients tested positive for at least one GPI-dependent aPL. Five of these patients also tested positive for GPI antibodies. GPI-independent aPLs were found in 21 of the samples from SLE patients.
