Adverse reactions associated with midline catheters - United States, 1992-1995
Article Abstract:
The use of Aquavene midline catheters made by Landmark may result in hypersensitivity-like reactions. In four case studies, symptoms such as chest or back pain, shortness of breath, nausea and skin rash occurred within minutes of insertion of the Landmark midline catheter and flushing with saline. One patient lost consciousness. Symptoms resolved within minutes of the removal of the catheter, which had been inserted into the antecubital vein of three of the patients. No medication had been administered via the catheter in any of the cases. No known cause could be attributed to the reactions. From April 1990 through July 1995, 72 similar reactions were reported. Such reactions are rarely associated with intravenous catheterization or subsequent flushing. Aquavene, an elastomeric hydrogel, is used only in Landmark catheters.

Landmine-related injuries, 1993-1996
Article Abstract:
Epidemiologic research may be able to prevent landmine injuries by identifying high-risk areas and the people living in them. There are approximately 120 million landmines buried in 71 countries worldwide. Most of the victims of landmines are civilian men, women and children. About 2,000 people are injured by landmines each month and 800 die from their injuries. Those who survive often require amputations and prostheses and incur large health care costs. Landmines often make arable land off-limits to farming, causing malnutrition among the residents. Many may move to cities, placing a burden on urban areas.
