Injuries from falls on playgrounds: effects of day care center regulation and enforcement
Article Abstract:
Day care centers with tall pieces of playground climbing equipment appear to have increased rates of child fall injuries. Researchers interviewed 1,740 day care center directors to study playground-related injuries, safety regulations, and regulatory enforcement. During the two-month study period, a weighted total of 89.2 injuries occurred from playground-related falls. An estimated 2,700 playground-related child fall injuries would have occurred in all US day care centers during this time period. The height of the tallest piece of playground climbing equipment was the most significant risk factor for fall injuries. Regulations governing playground surfaces and safety were not associated with reduced injury rates. Unannounced playground follow-up inspections were significantly related to a lower risk of fall injury.

The Epidemiology of Injuries in 4 Child Care Centers
Article Abstract:
Data from child care centers can help doctors develop injury prevention programs. In a survey of 362 preschoolers at four urban child care centers, 1,886 injuries occurred in a two-year period. Over 80% of the injuries occurred during play and 87% were minor. Over half were caused by child-related factors such as pushing and did not involve play equipment. Boys were more likely to be injured than girls.
