Interleukin-6 concentrations in cervical secretions identify microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity in patients with preterm labor and intact membranes
Article Abstract:
Measurements of interleukin-6 concentrations in cervical secretions may allow doctors to diagnose intrauterine infection in women in preterm labor who have an intact amniotic sac. Researchers measured concentrations of various inflammatory substances in the cervical secretions of 92 women in preterm labor with an unbroken amniotic sac. Cultures of amniotic fluid samples withdrawn by amniocentesis revealed that 18 of the women had intrauterine infections. Elevated levels of interleukin-6 correctly identified two-thirds of the infected women and 90% of the uninfected women.
