Coming to grips with large databases
Article Abstract:
The use of electronic databases has become a growing reality. Clinicians need to become familiar with their use and abuse in order to function in the current electronic world. Data from most encounters with patients eventually makes its way into a database. These data can be used by researchers to analyze treatment effectiveness and disease progression and by administrators to track cost-effectiveness and performance. Research studies published in respected journals are increasingly relying on volumes of information obtained in databases. The potential for recording errors in clinician performance also exists.

Expression and mutational analysis of P53 in stage IB and IIA cervical cancers
Article Abstract:
Overproduction of the p53 protein may indicate mutation of the P53 gene in cervical cancer. Mutation of the P53 gene has been associated with development of certain cancers. Researchers reviewed the medical records and examined tissue samples of 132 cervical cancer patients who underwent radical hysterectomy. Small amounts of p53 protein overexpression were found in cervical cancer cells, yet mutation within exons 4 to 10 of the P53 gene were infrequent. Although overexpression of p53 may be found in cervical cancer, it does not predict P53 mutation.
