Effect of pregnancy on the vasodepressor response to atrial natriuretic factor
Article Abstract:
Pregnancy does not appear to alter the response of blood pressure and heart rate to normal levels of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF). ANF is a hormone secreted by the heart that plays a role in mediating blood flow and urine output. Previous studies suggested that pregnancy induces resistance to the effects of ANF. The response to ANF was compared in 10 virgin and 10 pregnant rats. As the dosage of ANF increased, blood pressure and heart rate dropped in both groups. There was no significant difference between the groups in their response to ANF at five minutes or 20 minutes after injection at any dose. However, after 20 minutes and at extremely high doses of ANF, blood pressure dropped more in the virgin rats than in the pregnant rats.

Hemodynamic and hormonal responses to atrial distension in the ovine fetus
Article Abstract:
The heart of a fetus undergoing stress inside the uterus may adapt by releasing a substance known as atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) to change cardiac output. An example of intrauterine stress is hypoxia, or lack of oxygen to the fetus. Researchers used sheep fetuses to study the effect of changes in pressure in the heart atrium. Induced pressure changes in the atrium caused higher than normal levels of ANP to be released. High levels of arginine vasopressin and plasma renin activity were also observed in response to increases in atrial pressure. Changes in heart rate did not seem to influence ANP levels.
