Intervention plans can mobilize community
Article Abstract:
Intervention plans in communities can help them to ensure that all citizens are able to cope during weather extremes. Since the high death toll in the Jul 1995 heat wave in Chicago, IL, a plan has been implemented that enables city employees to check on residents that are at risk and send them to one of 125 cooling centers. Operation Weather Watch is an organized community program that was implemented in 1981 in St. Louis, MO, after deaths during a 1980 heat wave. Physicians can 'prescribe' air conditioners for high-risk individuals that are installed by the local electric utility.

Elderly at highest risk of heat-related problems
Article Abstract:
The elderly are the highest risk group during heat waves because of physiological and sociological factors. The elderly do not perspire as readily, have greater health problems, are more dehydrated and cannot detect temperature changes as readily as younger people. The elderly are not as close to their families as in previous generations. The aging of the population will mean greater possibilities for heat-related deaths in the future.
