Spinal cord stimulation in patients with chronic reflex sympathetic dystrophy
Article Abstract:
Patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy were relieved of the pain after electrical stimulation of the spinal cord combined with physical therapy, as revealed by a study involving 36 patients. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy affects the motor coordination in the foot or the hand. Spinal cord stimulation significantly reduced the pain in 39% of the patients, while only 6% of those who had only physical therapy reported they were "much improved."

Intrathecal baclofen for the treatment of dystonia in patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy
Article Abstract:
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy manifests as a pain syndrome of the foot or the hand and affects the motor movements of the affected parts resulting in poor muscle tone and function. Treatment with baclofen through bolus intrathecal injections and/or continuous administration significantly alleviated dystonic posturing in female patients with dystonia. Six women who received baclofen through injection showed complete or partial recovery of the focal dystonia of the hands. Three patients with continuous drug administration showed normal hand function and two of them even regained the ability to walk indoors.

New treatments for reflex sympathetic dystrophy
Article Abstract:
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a complex disorder of several types of symptoms and is often referred to as the complex regional pain syndrome to aid in the clinical diagnosis of the disorder. Recent studies have demonstrated the usefulness of spinal cord electrical stimulation and baclofen drug administration as possible treatments for this movement disorder.
