Is medicine doing more to accommodate families?
Article Abstract:
The large numbers of women entering the medical profession are changing the way medicine is practiced. Women are pushing for more flexible schedules to accommodate the demands of pregnancy and child rearing. They are more likely than in previous years to balance their career with time for their children, and some work part-time or share jobs. The medical profession, in turn, is more tolerant of such changes than in past years.

HIV tests urged for pregnant women; CDC guidelines caution that testing should be standard, but voluntary
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that pregnant women be tested for HIV. Thousands of HIV-positive infants are being delivered, and research reveals that treatment would prevent about 67% of these perinatal infections. Pres Clinton's proposed budget includes additional funds to support counseling, testing and treatment of low-income patients with HIV infections and AIDS.

Addiction treatment should consider patient's background
Article Abstract:
Physicians should consider the race, culture and gender of patients when approaching them about addictions such as smoking.
