Is syncope related to moderate altitude exposure?
Article Abstract:
Visitors to the mountains from low lying areas are more likely to have fainting episodes than people who live in higher areas. Only 65% of visitors from moderate altitudes had syncope of undetermined origin. Those visiting from the lowest areas had a higher rate of syncope than those from residences at 1000m to 2000m. The arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) and hematocrit levels differed as well. Those living at moderate altitudes had higher SaO2 levels than people from the lowest altitudes. Highest altitude residents also had higher hematocrits than people from the lower areas. Fainting occurred within 24 hours of arrival at 2770m and patients had a complete loss of consciousness. They were otherwise healthy with a mean age of 35. Some causes of these episodes may include vasoconstriction from hyperventilation, diuresis which is normal with short term visits to high altitudes and increased physical activity in a low humidity environment.

Impact of a children's health insurance program on newly enrolled children
Article Abstract:
Extending health insurance to uninsured children could lead to more appropriate use of resources and ensure that all children receive health care. Researchers analyzed resource use within 659 families with 1,031 children who had been enrolled in two managed care programs in Western Pennsylvania. One year after enrollment, 99% of the children had a regular source of medical care, compared to 89% before enrollment. Only 12% had an unmet health care need, compared to 57% before enrollment. Seventeen percent visited an emergency room for treatment compared to 22% before enrollment.
