Maternal bereavement in the perinatal substance abuser
Article Abstract:
The anticipation of loss of child custody by pregnant women due to substance abuse was evaluated in a small sample. Maternal bereavement is a psychological stress felt due to loss of a child or loved one and the significance of this is studied in substance abusers. Results attest to the significance of past and anticipated loss in the perinatal substance abuser. This may be useful in developing a more effective treatment approach if the public health implications of the findings are recognized.
