Key policy debates on HIV in the inner city
Article Abstract:
Numerous debates have raged over the appropriate public policy relative to the HIV epidemic in the inner cities in the US. Little has changed in public policy on HIV infection, even after the virus has reached new core groups of minority drug users and their families. Similarly, minimal change has been effected on public policies concerning the two factors underlying the HIV epidemic, namely, illegal drugs and poverty. The seeming lack of initiative in advancing public policy on HIV is attributed to conflicting values in these inner cities.

HIV in the inner cities: epidemiologic trends and their influence on policy-making decisions
Article Abstract:
A host of other social and health problems aggravates the already worsening HIV epidemic in America's inner cities. A high incidence of sexually transmitted and chronic diseases as well as insufficient health insurance coverage, coupled with social maladies such as drug abuse, lack of educational opportunities, underemployment and unemployment, all contribute to the spread of HIV infection in these inner cities. Thus, policies and programs concerning the HIV epidemic need to factor in these social and health problems.

A tale of two trends: tuberculosis and typhoid fever
Article Abstract:
The incidence of tuberculosis and typhoid fever began to decline in the 1930s with the development of new medical technologies such as anti-tuberculosis drugs and skin testing programs. However, present studies indicate that the incidence of these diseases will likely rise again due to the lack of health policies and information campaigns that will educate the public about the nature of these illnesses.
