Labour of love: undervalued and under attack - that is how surrogate mothers in the UK feel
Article Abstract:
The first surrogate mother in the UK describes how media coverage of the two times she was a surrogate mother differed and her feelings towards both births. The first birth through artificial insemination caused newspaper headlines such as 'Born to be sold', but when she later acted as a surrogate mother for friends, the tone changed to headlines such as 'Labour of love'. However, her feelings were that she was enabling infertile couples to have children. Although the medical world has now accepted surrogacy and laws allow couples to adopt their surrogate child, it still causes controversy, and there are still arguments that childless couples should adopt instead.

Baring the breast: love, defilement, and breast-feeding
Article Abstract:
Breast-feeding has been a sensitive issue since the 18th century, when writer Jean-Jacques Rousseau suggested in his novel 'Emile' that women found it objectionable to nurse their children. He asserted that the type of milk received by infants plays a key role in their growth and development. Rousseau's claims persisted well into the 19th century, where it was discovered that the quality of milk fed to infants was more important than its source. However, despite the discoveries on the value of mother's milk, many women continue to see breast-feeding as a violation of their freedom and sexuality.
