Liver failure in young children
Article Abstract:
Liver transplantation is essential for children with fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). However, traditionally such treatment has been rare due to a scarcity of donor livers. The development of surgical techniques for reducing liver size has enabled more transplantations to take place. King's College Hospital, London, England has conducted transplants on 12 children between four weeks and twelve years old. A liver was reduced to one eighth of its size for transplant to the youngest recipient. About 50% of patients recovered.

Avoiding and treating the skin irritations of babies and children
Article Abstract:
Babies and young children can be susceptible to a range of skin conditions. Some are very minor, and will disappear without treatment. Others are more serious and often cause parents considerable concern. In many cases, skin problems can be avoided if care is taken to cleanse the skin thoroughly and to use barrier creams. Seborrhoeic dermatitis usually responds to daily baths with baby oil added to the water, but eczema and psoriasis can be harder to treat.

A friend in need
Article Abstract:
The case of a mother with a seriousy ill child in hospital and little emotional support from her family is presented. Befriending services for parents of such children could play a valuable role in helping them cope. However, current financial constraints and the heavy caseloads of community paediatric nurses would make such a role difficult to fund and involvement by the voluntary sector is the logical solution.
