Local health plan to merge with Colorado Blue Cross
Article Abstract:
HSI Health Plans Inc. is merging with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado because the nonprofit entity needs a big partner, says HSI chief exec Chuck Mabry. The Colorado Blues, which is converting to for-profit status, has 384,000 members, compared with 21,000 for HSI. HSI doctors and patients have expressed concern about the merger. Colorado's Department of Insurance is likely to schedule a public hearing on the planned deal, according to Maryellen Wagner, deputy insurance commissioner.
