Lot of guesswork, little data, on Proposition 187's effects
Article Abstract:
Public health experts claim that there is not enough data to make reasonable predictions about the potential effects of California Proposition 187 on public health. The measure, which passed in the Nov 1994 election, is likely to be tied up in court for several years. Its opponents say that infectious diseases and birth defects will increase in California if health care is denied to illegal immigrants. Proponents claim the opposite. However, both sides may be unaware that the limited research on immigrant health care suggests that illegal aliens do not make much use of the public health system.

Looking for more controls on managed care in California
Article Abstract:
Many complaints have been lodged concerning the managed health care plans that deliver care to more than 50% of California residents. For instance, the private plans spend five times as much on administrative expenses as Medi-Cal, the state program for the indigent, according to the California Medical Assn. Two cases gave patients large settlements for refusal to pay for needed treatment, others are under investigation, and several regulatory measures have been introduced in the legislature.

CMA subsidiary joins in evaluating California HMOs
Article Abstract:
The California Medical Association's Institute for Medical Quality (IMQ) and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations have been awarded a contract to evaluate health maintenance organizations (HMO) in California.
