Low serum progesterone levels and tubal dysfunction - a possible cause of ectopic pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Ectopic pregnancy, the implantation of the products of conception outside of the uterus, can cause maternal death. Low levels of progesterone, a hormone responsible for preparing the uterus for implantation, are thought to be a possible cause of ectopic pregnancies. The environment created by low progesterone is not conducive to implantation and the ovum therefore implants elsewhere in the body. The fallopian tube leading from the ovary to the uterus normally propels the ovum for implantation inside the uterus. The electrical activity in the fallopian tubes was used to assess the mechanical activity inside the tubes in 11 women with low progesterone and 11 with high progesterone. There were fewer electrical bursts, and presumably poorer propulsion of the ovum, in those patients having low progesterone. This poorly functioning tube may cause the ovum to implant inside the tube instead of the uterus.

Temporal and cell-specific gene expression by human endometrium after coculture with trophoblast
Article Abstract:
A cell culture technique called differential display may allow researchers to identify which genes are active during the implantation of a fertilized egg into the uterus and the formation of the placenta. Researchers used the technique to analyze gene expression in two uterine cells that were cultured in the presence of human embryonic cells. Some genes were turned on and others were turned off. One gene was identified whose function was completely unknown.

Treatment of tubal pregnancy in the Netherlands: an economic comparison of systemic methotrexate administration and laparoscopic salpingostomy
Article Abstract:
Methotrexate is not necessarily cheaper than laparoscopic salpingostomy in treating tubal pregnancy. A tubal pregnancy occurs when the embryo does not reach the uterus but attaches inside the fallopian tubes.
