Lure of money can be stronger than friendship
Article Abstract:
Some people will sue a physician even if he is a friend. This experience can be very painful for the physician, who frequently has been taught that maintaining good relations with a patient can prevent lawsuits. For example, one physician was sued by a patient he had treated for almost fifty years. The suit destroyed the relationship between the physician and his patient and caused a schism in the patient's family.

A doctor chooses when to die
Article Abstract:
Dr. Allison B. Willeford, MD has been an outspoken supporter of a patient's right to die. Now, on his fourth bout of cancer, he is seeking help from another doctor to get a prescription for secobarbital that, if swallowed, would end his life. However, this effort is complicated by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft's threat to pull the DEA license of any doctor who assists in a patient's right to die.

A title can mean a lot, so call this physician 'doctor.' (potential results of loss of professional titles) (Column)
Article Abstract:
There is a trend in the 1990s to delete professional titles from the names of health care workers and others. If society continues to eliminate professional titles, physicians may lose their lead in the health care system as well as their higher pay. Physicians should strive to maintain the title of 'doctor' for the value it lends to the profession and the individual.
