Article Abstract:
The number of reported cases of Lyme disease in the US reached a record high in 1996. Altogether, 16,461 cases were reported nationwide. This represents a 41% increase over 1995. Ninety-one percent of the cases occurred in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Wisconsin. In some counties in these states, the incidence of Lyme disease exceeded 100 per 100,000 people. Twenty-eight states nationwide reported an increase in cases over 1995 and 90% of the increase occurred in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Article Abstract:
The incidence of Lyme disease appears to have declined between 1994 and 1995. A total of 11,603 cases of Lyme disease were reported in the US in 1995, down 11% from 13,043 cases in 1994. Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin and Minnesota accounted for 92% of the cases. Even so, the number of cases fell 27% in Rhode Island, 26% in Connecticut and 24% in New York. The number of cases increased by 40% in Pennsylvania and 29% in Minnesota.
