Lysophosphatidic Acid as a Potential Biomarker for Ovarian and Other Gynecologic Cancers
Article Abstract:
Blood levels of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) may be useful as a marker for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer has a poor prognosis because there are no tests to detect the disease at an early stage when it could be curable. Researchers measured blood levels of LPA in 48 healthy women, 48 women with ovarian cancer and 36 women with other gynecological cancers. The women with ovarian cancer and other gynecological cancers had much higher LPA levels than the healthy women. Only one woman with ovarian cancer did not have elevated LPA levels, making LPA a better biomarker than CA125.

Does Owning a Firearm Increase or Decrease the Risk of Death?
Article Abstract:
Having a gun in the home does not appear to be beneficial and may even increase the risk of death. A gun can be used to ward off an assailant, but can also be used against oneself. The most effective way to study the effect of gun ownership on mortality is a case-control study. Six case-control studies have shown that gun ownership increases the risk of suicide. Two of the studies also found that gun ownership increases the risk of homicide. Although more research is needed, no study found any positive benefit of owning a gun.

Efforts under way to increase number of potential kidney transplant donors
Article Abstract:
Several new efforts are in place to increase the donor pool of potential kidney donors and newer researches are also helping in this effort. There are thousands of patients waiting to undergo kidney transplantation and efforts like paired donation or extended criteria would immensely help in increasing the number of donors.
