Evidence-based medicine: a new approach to teaching the practice of medicine
Article Abstract:
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at McMaster University, Ontario, is committed to teaching evidence-based medicine to program participants. Evidence-based medicine is the practice of making medical decisions based on clinical evidence in the medical literature rather than on intuition. Residents in internal medicine at McMaster University are taught to use computerized programs to search the medical literature for articles related to clinical cases. At weekly discussion sessions, they are taught to relate the articles to the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients with different disorders. Attending physicians at McMaster University are required to set an enthusiastic example for residents in the practice of evidence-based medicine. Barriers that may be encountered to the practice of evidence-based medicine include economic and time constraints and limited access to the medical literature.

New insights into diabetic polyneuropathy
Article Abstract:
Peripheral nerve disease can occur in the early stages of diabetes even before the patient has been diagnosed with diabetes. It may start with numbness, tingling, and reduced sensation in the toes and feet. These patients should have a glucose tolerance test to see if they have impaired glucose tolerance. This is considered a precursor of diabetes.
