Making the numbers work for you: doctors can use RBRVS to manage managed care
Article Abstract:
Many insurers are converting physician payment to a resource-based relative value scale (RBRVS) such as the one used in Medicare reimbursement. Because RBRVS systems are becoming increasingly prevalent among private insurers, physicians must learn to use them profitably. For example, physicians should identify their most common procedures and determine what conversion factor they need to maintain their current income. Then they should consider changing their procedure mix to include a higher number of their more profitable procedures. Detailed information on implementing an RBRVS is presented.

Military wants RBRVS; doctors worry it may be extended further
Article Abstract:
Many physicians fear extension of resource-based relative value system (RBRVS) to treatment of military personnel. A proposal that includes use of RBRVS has been made by the Civilian Health and Medical Program for the Uniformed Services, which governs medical treatment for military dependents and retirees. Objections to the plan are outlined by spokesmen for the AMA and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Oregon Blues first private insurer to adopt RBRVS approach to payment
Article Abstract:
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oregon began to use a relative value payment reimbursing system (RBRVS) on Jan 1, 1992 to pay physicians for their services. Overall, less is paid for procedure-based services, and more is paid for cognitive services. By 1996, the company will pay physicians more than Medicare pays for every Current Procedural Terminology code.
