Malpractice and the health care crisis
Article Abstract:
The malpractice litigation system is contributing to much of the health care crisis. For example, unlimited tort liability of physicians has cost about $20 million annually as a result of physicians becoming more cautious and defensive in their approach to medicine. The tort system has also led to more early retirements and changes in occupation because physicians are finding it more difficult to conduct business in a profitable and comfortable manner. The litigation system thus lowers access to and raises cost of medical care.

U.S. needs fair, affordable national health care
Article Abstract:
The US has the most modern and technologically advanced medical facilities in the world, but access to medical care is increasingly restricted to only those patients who can afford to pay for the high cost of care. Many doctors refuse to accept Medicaid because of low payment levels and reimbursement delays. Only 40% of the poor currently receive Medicaid coverage. Middle income families are finding it increasingly difficult to access the health care system because of increasing insurance premiums and high deductibles.

Issues of race, poverty and national health insurance
Article Abstract:
Health statistics for blacks in the United States show high infant mortality, lower life expectancy and limited access to health care services. Statistics for Hispanic Americans are not available because death certificates did not ask for information on Hispanic origin until 1988, but it is known that many are employed in industries that do not offer health insurance. The US can maintain its position as a world leader only if the country institutes a health care system that does not depend on employment.
