Management of temporomandibular disorders
Article Abstract:
The cause of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may be difficult to determine, and no treatment methods have been proven over the long term. TMD involves pain or loss of function of the temporomandibular (jaw) joint and surrounding muscles. The National Institutes of Health sponsored a conference on TMD, addressing contemporary management. Conservative treatments are suggested initially, meaning noninvasive and reversible methods. Patients should be encouraged to take part in their care through changing their behaviors and relaxation. Dentists need to be educated in the effective treatment of TMD.
