Managing deep vein thrombosis at home: An experiment with an early discharge scheme led to increased efficiency and greater patient satisfaction
Article Abstract:
Patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) are traditionally managed in hospital, with an average stay of seven days. Low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) have been developed to treat such patients, and this has led to an early discharge scheme. The aim was for care to be delivered in patients' homes, whilst remaining consultant-led. The scheme is now being expanded to include patients requiring anticoagulant therapy, post-operatively.
