Managing diabetes: knowledge for practice
Article Abstract:
Diabetes affects about 1.2% of people in the United Kingdom, although a further 1% of sufferers are thought to be undiagnosed. Non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) affects 75-80% of sufferers. An auto-immune disease process is present in insulin-dependent diabetes (IDDM), with a viral agent or other environmental factor responsible for triggering the process. The inability to use endogenous insulin characterises diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is more likely to occur among Asians and the elderly. The management of diabetes is discussed.

Spreading the word on insulin therapy
Article Abstract:
Diabetes patients need to have access to specialist diabetes nurses who are able to offer advice and information on managing an illness which can be life threatening if not treated properly. Diabetes patients who are given the opportunity to receive insulin therapy must be taught the correct way to give injections, how to carry out blood tests and what to do in emergencies. Nurses can give patients the confidence to use insulin therapy in a responsible manner, improving their quality of life.
