Marked variation in responses to long-term nitric oxide inhibition during pregnancy in outbred rats from two different colonies
Article Abstract:
A study in rats shows that there may be a genetic basis for preeclampsia, a serious complication of pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, kidney abnormalities and fetal growth restriction. These symptoms can be induced by blocking the action of nitric oxide, but rats from different colonies responded differently to drugs that block nitric oxide production.

Role of nitric oxide on vasorelaxation in human umbilical artery
Article Abstract:
The chemical histamine may induce relaxation of the human umbilical artery in the middle of pregnancy rather than at the end. Researchers studied how histamine affects dilation of the umbilical artery by using thin strips of umbilical muscle from fetuses in the middle of pregnancy. Endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) responded more strongly to histamine in mid-pregnancy than at term. EDRF is thought to be nitric oxide. Nitric oxide caused relaxation and dilation of the umbilical artery. Contractions are caused by the release of calcium ions from various storage sites. Histamine antagonists are given to pregnant women with asthma or allergies. The findings of this study may indicate that this practice decreases umbilical blood flow.

Effect of placental tissue on inhibition of uterine contraction by nitric oxide donors
Article Abstract:
The placenta appears to inhibit uterine contractions in mid-pregnancy but not at delivery. This effect appears to involve nitric oxide according to a study of uterine tissue in the presence and absence of placental tissue.
