Progress toward elimination of measles from the Americas
Article Abstract:
The Western Hemisphere has made good progress toward the goal of eliminating measles. This goal of eliminating measles from the Americas by the year 2000 was established in 1994. Between 1987 and 1994, many countries in the region implemented catch-up campaigns and by 1996, over half had achieved 90% coverage or better. A total of 2,109 measles cases were confirmed in 1996, which is a record low. Over 60% of the countries reported no measles cases. Every country has a measles laboratory that is part of a regional surveillance network.
