Measles in the United States, 2006
Article Abstract:
The highly infectious nature of measles, the vulnerability of vaccinated communities in the world in which the virus continues to circulate is discussed considering the 2005 measles outbreak in Indiana. The control and virtual elimination of measles in the US is considered to be a public health success that has provided a model for immunization programs in developing countries, though further outbreaks might occur even in industrialized countries if people refuse to vaccinate their infants.

System failure versus personal accountability--The case for clean hands
Article Abstract:
Primarily the contaminated hands of health care providers who have touched a colonized patient or something in the patient's environment transmit an increasing number of infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Curbing this increase in the rate of infections requires both improvements in complex, error-prone health care systems as well as increased personal accountability, such as the practice of simple hand hygiene by individual care providers.

The isolation of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella from retail ground meats
Article Abstract:
Researchers discovered that 20% of 200 meat samples they tested from three grocery stores were contaminated with Salmonella. Eighty-four percent of the Salmonella strains were resistant to one antibiotic, half were resistant to three antibiotics, and some were resistant to nine or more different antibiotics. This is a direct result of the use of antibiotics in food animals.
