Medical aminoreduction with sulindac to reduce cord complications in monoamniotic twins
Article Abstract:
The drug sulindac may effectively reduce amniotic fluid volume and umbilical cord entanglement in twin pregnancies with a single amniotic sac. Researchers identified three twin pregnancies with a single amniotic sac that were at risk of cord compression and entanglement. Sulindac was given to the mothers twice a day beginning at weeks 27, 29, and 24 of pregnancy. Sulindac achieved a dose-related decrease of amniotic fluid volume and fetal urine production without compromising fetal circulation. All six twins were electively delivered at 32 weeks of pregnancy without complications.

Prenatal diagnosis by minimally invasive first-trimester transcervical sampling is unreliable
Article Abstract:
Tests on cell samples from the cervix do not appear to be a reliable way to determine the fetus' gender in the first trimester of pregnancy. One of two types of genetic tests, fluorescence in situ hybridization or polymerase chain reaction, was performed on cervical swab samples from 87 women terminating their pregnancy in the first trimester. Fluorescence in situ hybridization tests correctly identified the gender in up to 72% of 36 samples. Polymerase chain reaction tests correctly identified 79% of the male fetuses and 45% of the female fetuses.
