Medical cyberspace - free: Web access draws doctors to Internet on physician-only service
Article Abstract:
Physicians' Online provides medical resources for doctors free-of-charge. The proprietary on-line service was launched in 1994 and is supported by pharmaceutical advertisements which appear on the bottom of the computer screen. Free services include e-mail, placement services, unlimited access to MEDLINE and news and discussion groups. The service has 125,000 members and is accessed by an average of 10,000 physicians per day.

Network shares medical info with payers, employers
Article Abstract:
InterNet is being established to provide occupational medicine information services via a network to healthcare providers, payers, and employers. The startup company is scheduled to begin providing services in September 1995. Using a program called CompManager, the system will keep the three parties informed of a patient's status on a near real-time basis. Approx 150 providers are applying for the service.

Biometric security, or physical feature recognition of information system users, is becoming available for the medical profession. Prices have decreased from over $5,000 per work station in 1994 to approximately $1,000 per work station in 1997. Government agencies were the only organizations that could afford these systems in the past.
