Air pollution information activities at state and local agencies - United States, 1992
Article Abstract:
Many local and state governments may need to improve their efforts to inform the public of the health risks associated with air pollution. Air pollution increases the risk of disorders such as eye irritation, lung diseases and cancer. A study surveyed 197 state, territorial and local air pollution control agencies about their efforts to educate the public on the health risks of air pollution. Sixty-eight percent of the agencies were in districts where pollution levels exceeded at least one of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards between Jul 1989 and Jul 1992. Eighty-four percent of the agencies in districts that exceeded air quality standards provided the media with information on air pollution, compared with 48% of the agencies in districts that did not exceed standards. Thirty-four percent employed at least one health care professional, and 86% provided educational materials on air pollution to individuals requesting this information.

Environmental medicine: integrating a missing element into medical education
Article Abstract:
Medical education should include courses on environmental health. Patients often ask their physicians about environmental influences, such as tap water safety. Many doctors cannot answer the questions because of limited knowledge on the subject. Physicians should be able to associate symptoms with environmental agents of disease, and be able to discuss risk factors. They should be able to take a detailed history from the patient so enough information is gathered to provide a diagnosis and treatment for common environmental diseases. Physicians need to know referral sources and understand ethical and legal issues facing patients with environmental illnesses.
