Medical-process patents -- Monopolizing the delivery of health care
Article Abstract:
The controversy over patent policy in a case brought before the Supreme Court, Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp) v. Metabolite Laboratories which centered on a patent for a method of diagnosing a vitamin deficiency on the basis of the levels of homocysteine in blood is reported. The issues raised by LabCorp emphasize that medical-process patents continue to have substantial effects on the science and practice of medicine and upholding claim 13 would subject the medical profession to restrictions that might inhibit doctors from using their best medical judgment.

Regulatory and judicial oversight of nonprofit hospitals
Article Abstract:
The laws that govern the conduct on non-profit hospitals are complex, with multiple regulators seeking to enforce standards of charitable purpose, with constantly evolving rules. These challenges press nonprofit hospitals to develop increasingly aggressive business models such as avoid bad debt and to attract patients who are well insured, form joint ventures with medical groups to provide physicians with the profit they might otherwise seek through for-profit ambulatory care and surgical centers.
