Medically Underserved Children Need More Than Insurance Card
Article Abstract:
Insuring all children is a worthy goal but it will not address the fundamental problems preventing access to health care. Since Congress passed the State Child Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in 1997, about 2 million children have been enrolled in the program. SCHIP will give states $40 billion over 10 years to purchase health insurance for low-income uninsured children. However, many children live in rural areas where there are few doctors. Even if a rural community has a health center, many parents will not be able to get to the center if they lack a reliable source of transportation.

Issues in Prostate Cancer Screening
Article Abstract:
The American Cancer Society recommends that doctors screen men over 50 for prostate cancer when the men come in for their regular check-up. Screening usually involves measuring the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in blood. Rising levels may indicate the presence of cancer. However, it is not clear that mass screening of all middle-aged men would lead to lower mortality rates. Many men have a slowly progressing form of cancer that will probably never kill them. If so, they would not benefit from treatments that have severe side effects.
