Medicine, government talk cost control: White House proposes reform trade-off
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration is willing to offer the medical community less bureaucracy and better malpractice laws in return for help in managing healthcare costs, according to VP Albert Gore Jr. The vice-president spoke to 1,000 physicians who attended the American Medical Association's Mar 1993 conference on healthcare reform. Medical professionals agree that cost control is essential but do not agree on how this should be accomplished. Gore stated that the administration wants health benefits for all in the US plus continued high quality of care, in addition to healthcare cost control.

Panel urges better emergency care for children
Article Abstract:
A study by a panel of the Institute of Medicine has concluded that emergency care for children is inadequate in the US. For example, the main cause of child death is head injury, but cervical collars, used to protect a person's airway, are not available in children's sizes. In addition, pediatric specialists and facilities are not always available at well equipped hospitals. The panel recommended that the government spend $150 million between 1993 and 1998 to improve emergency services and provide education and training to health care personnel.
