Q fever in children
Article Abstract:
Children suffering from a fever and liver impairment may need to be evaluated for Q fever, especially if they live in an area with a high incidence of the disease. Q fever is an infection caused by the Coxiella burnetii organism. It is acquired by inhaling dust or other particles in the air that have been infected by fluids from animals. A study examined the symptoms experienced by 13 children between two and 14 years old who were diagnosed with Q fever. Twelve patients experienced a high fever over a five to 10-day period and mild liver impairment. Eleven patients had gastrointestinal symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Other symptoms included headache, joint pain, weakness, fatigue and mild coughing. Most of the patients recovered without undergoing any type of specific treatment for Q fever.

Serum cholesterol levels in patients with acute rheumatic fever
Article Abstract:
Cholesterol metabolism abnormalities may occur in acute rheumatic fever (ARF), a disease resulting from streptococcal infection. Rheumatic fever can lead to rheumatic heart disease, so blood cholesterol levels that put patients at risk for coronary heart disease are of concern. To determine if ARF does affect cholesterol metabolism, researchers studied 46 children hospitalized with ARF, 51 siblings and 92 healthy children. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides were measured in blood samples, and liver function tests were performed. The children with ARF had lower levels of HDL cholesterol than the healthy children. Also the ARF patients who had evidence of carditis, or heart inflammation, had abnormal results from their liver function tests.
