Meet the press: media-savvy physicians help educate the public while enhancing their own images
Article Abstract:
Many physicians enjoy contacts with the press, and they believe that their practice benefits from exposure to the media. Hospital public relations departments may assist doctors who want to conduct seminars or give interview on subjects that concern them. Also, reporters are usually receptive to calls from doctors. Physicians should accept the limitations on their knowledge and resist the temptation to answer questions on topics outside their expertise.

Those hurdles include disparate state policies, a need for data standards, and insurers' capabilities. Eleven states' Medicaid programs already use the technology, however, and more swipe card programs are under development.
