Memory recovered - or invented: U.S. brings criminal charges against Texas doctors, others in repressed memory treatment

The federal government filed criminal charges against five Spring Shadows Glen psychiatric hospital employees for mail fraud and conspiracy in treating patients for repressed memories. The suit alleges that the employees knowingly reported false information about repressed memories from patients to insurance companies so that payments could be received. A civil suit involving the same employees resulted in a $5.8 million negligence judgment plus an undisclosed settlement.

FTC alleges price-fixing by makers of PRK lasers

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has charged Summit Technology Inc. and VISX Inc. with antitrust violations regarding their partnership in marketing a laser surgery procedure. The FTC alleges the two firms generated around $30 million in patient and physician overcharges for laser corneal surgery treatment fees. Summit and VISX had been charging $250 for each eye treated.
