Methodology and Reports of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses
Article Abstract:
Review articles published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews appear to be more useful and current than meta-analyses and reviews published in medical journals. The Cochrane database contains 36 reviews of important clinical topics. Researchers compared these reviews with 39 reviews published in the medical literature in 1995. Reviews in the medical literature contained more authors, trials and patients, but all 36 reviews in the Cochrane database assessed the quality of the trials and half had been updated by 1997. Only 12 of 39 reviews from the literature assessed trial quality and only one had been updated by 1997.

Reviewing the Reviews
Article Abstract:
Scientists who write review articles may focus on the literature of their own country and specialty. Researchers searched the medical literature to identify 89 reviews of chronic fatigue syndrome published between 1980 and 1996. The specialty of the first author was noted as was his or her country of residence and the types of literature cited in the review. Seventy-two percent of the references cited by US authors were from US journals, and 55% of references cited by UK authors were from UK journals.
