Methotrexate for chronic diseases in adults
Article Abstract:
Studies of methotrexate suggest the drug may constitute a new treatment strategy for Crohn's disease and other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, but the side effects of the drug need to be better understood. In one study of Crohn's disease patients, methotrexate resulted in remission for 39.4% of the patients, compared to 19.1% in the placebo group. A major benefit of methotrexate is the reduced need for corticosteroids, which can cause the buildup of toxins in the body. Side effects associated with methotrexate include gastronomical toxicity, which can often be offset through folate therapy. More serious side effects include pulmonary toxicity and hepatotoxicity. Patients receiving methotrexate should be monitored regularly for these side-effects until an acceptable dosage for the patient can be established.

Treatment of Crohn's disease at the turn of the Century
Article Abstract:
The treatment of Crohn's disease has progressed but still presents many challenges. Corticosteroids are the most common treatment, but long-term use causes severe side effects. However, a 1998 study found that a controlled-release form of the corticosteroid drug budesonide was effective in inducing remission and had few severe side effects. Research on the immunology of Crohn's disease led to the development of a monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha, an inflammatory chemical. This antibody has been very effective in tests and an FDA committee recommended its approval for this use.
