Metronidazole to prevent preterm delivery in pregnant women with asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis
Article Abstract:
Treating pregnant women who have bacterial vaginosis does not appear to reduce the risk of premature birth. Bacterial vaginosis is a bacterial infection in the vagina. Researchers randomly assigned 1,953 women with bacterial vaginosis to receive two doses of the antibiotic metronidazole or a placebo. The infection cleared up in 78% of the women who received metronidazole compared to 37% of the women who received a placebo. However, 12% of the women in both groups had a premature delivery.

Metronidazole to prevent preterm delivery in pregnant women with asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis
Article Abstract:
No reduction in the occurrence of preterm delivery or other perinatal outcomes was observed in pregnant women treated for asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis. Metronidazole administration to 953 pregnant women did not reduce preterm delivery, intraamniotic or postpartum infections, neonatal sepsis, or requirement for neonatal intensive care for the infant .

Failure of metronidazole to prevent preterm delivery among pregnant women with asymptomatic Trichomonas vaginalis infection
Article Abstract:
Treating Trichomonas vaginalis infection in pregnant women will not necessarily prevent premature birth. In fact, in a study of 320 women who took an antibiotic for Trichomonas infection and 297 women who took a placebo, the premature birth rate was higher in the women who took the antibiotic.
