Cervical anti-inflammatory cytokine concentrations among first-trimester pregnant smokers
Article Abstract:
A study to examine the impact of smoking in pregnancy on the detection of the 3 most important anti-inflammatory cytokines ( interleukin-4, -10 and -13) in the cervix is presented. Cigarette smoking in pregnancy is associated with an increase of cervical anti-inflammatory cytokines without a proportionate increase of proinflammatory cytokines, which may have important impact on the host response to the infection.

The vaginal inflammatory milieu and the risk of the early premature preterm rupture of membranes
Article Abstract:
The study determines the association of vaginal pH greater than or equal to 5.0 and vaginal neutrophils >5 per oil field with preterm rupture of membranes (PPROM). Elevated vaginal pH and neutrophils are most strongly associated with early third-trimester PPROM, reflecting the importance of infection and/or inflammation in the pathogenesis of this condition.
