'Mini-med schools' offer lay public lessons in the science of medicine
Article Abstract:
Medical school faculty involved in mini-med schools are finding that the public has an intense curiosity about medicine. Mini-med schools provide lectures to the public on topics similar to those encountered by a first-year medical student. Almost two dozen universities have created mini-med schools since the first one started at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1990. Many of the programs, which enroll several hundred people at a time, have long waiting lists. Some use videoconferencing to extend the program's reach to people in outlying communities. Some of the programs are free while others charge a nominal fee. The faculty lecturers usually offer their services for free. A mini-med school at the Bethesda campus of the National Institutes of Health has been extremely popular, especially with legislative aides. The NIH hopes to begin a mini-med school at Ballou High School in Washington. DC.

Scientists revel in new research tool: an online index of cancer genes
Article Abstract:
An online index to cancer genes may allow cancer researchers to share and access genetic information in a way not possible before. The database is located at the Web site of the National Library of Medicine and is produced in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute. One goal of the project is to analyze tissue samples from the breast, colon, lung, prostate and ovary and identify genes in normal, precancerous and malignant cells. This will allow scientists to see how genes change as the cells become cancerous. This will be aided by a technique called laser capture microdissection, which allows scientists to isolate different tissue types from a tumor.

National Library of Medicine to Help Consumers Use Online Health Data
Article Abstract:
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) will provide more than $1 million to fund 49 projects in 34 states that provide online health information to members of the public. NLM has traditionally provided information mostly to doctors and other health care professionals. Many libraries that have received the grants hope to reach people who don't normally have access to computers. Elderly Americans in particular have few opportunities to access online information.
