Molecular biology of HTLV-I: recent progress
Article Abstract:
The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) produces a protein that can cause cells to proliferate. This could explain how the virus causes adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). The virus produces a protein called Tax, which can cause tumors in mice. Tax binds to a protein with an ankyrin motif that is involved in the cell cycle. When Tax binds to this protein, the cells leave the resting phase and begin to proliferate. The protein is known to be the product of a tumor suppressor gene. Inactivation of the protein by Tax could lead to ATL.

Insights on the pathogenicity of human T-lymphotropic/leukemia virus types I and II
Article Abstract:
The human T-lymphotropic/leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) may cause adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) by permanently activating the T cell receptor for interleukin-2 (IL-2). This was demonstrated in T cell lines that had been infected with HTLV-I. Normally when the IL-2 receptor is activated by IL-2, several enzymes and transcription activators are turned on. In the infected T cell line, the enzymes and activators were activated in the absence of IL-2. This could cause T cells to proliferate, and could lead to ATLL.

Simian T-lymphotropic virus type I infection among wild-caught Indonesian pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina)
Article Abstract:
Many monkeys in Indonesia are infected with simian T-lymphotropic virus type I (STLV-I). This virus is related to human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). Of 60 wild pig-tailed macaques caught in southern Sumatra, 13% tested positive for STLV-I. This is the first report of STLV-I infection in these wild monkeys.
