Efficacy and safety of lowering dietary intake of fat and cholesterol in children with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol: the dietary intervention study in children (DISC)
Article Abstract:
A low-fat diet can result in a limited, but important, lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in children after three years, while guarding iron stores and maintaining growth and proper nutrition in pubescent children. Of the 663 boys and girls between 7 and 10 years studied, 334 were placed in the intervention group and 329 in the usual care group. The children's cholesterol levels ranged between the 80th and 98 percentile for sex and age. The diet for the intervention group consisted of less than 75 mg/4200 kJ per day of cholesterol, 28% of energy from total fat, less than 8% from saturated fat and 9% or less from polyunsaturated fat. No specific recommendations were offered to children in the usual care group, although parents were informed of the high cholesterol levels. Even small decreases in LDL-C levels in childhood may avert the development of atherosclerosis.

Effects of reviparin, a low-molecular-weight heparin, on mortality, reinfraction, and strokes in patients with acute myocardial infraction presenting with ST-segment elevation
Article Abstract:
The effects of reviparin, a low-molecular-weight heparin, when initiated early and given for 7 days in addition to usual therapy on the primary composite outcome of death, myocardial reinfraction (MI), or strokes at 7 and 30 days are explored. The results reveal that in patients with acute St-segment elevation or new left bundle-branch block MI, reviparin reduces mortality and reinfraction, without a substantive increase in overall stroke rates.
