Mother knows best?: is congress accountable to RCN delegates, or is it just a hugely expensive talking shop - a showpiece for the media?
Article Abstract:
The issue of the effectiveness of congress in turning the wishes of RCN members into college policy will be debated at Harrogate, particularly as a decision over nurses' injury compensation pay-outs flew in the face of an 85% majority vote by delegates. There are sometimes gaps between what council actually does and what it has been urged to do by congress, but general secretary of the RCN Christine Hancock, claims that congress resolutions are taking extremely seriously by council. However congress cannot dictate policy and has no power to make decisions on RCN spending plans.

Marching orders
Article Abstract:
The ruling bodies of the UK nursing profession should have a radical overhaul, according to a report issued by JM Consulting in Jan 1998. The report forms a consultation document which reviews the Nurses', Midwives' and Health Visitors Act 1997. The report advocates that the UKCC and four national boards should eliminate unnecessary activities and concentrate on their intended function of protecting the public from nursing incompetence or malpractice. A more radical proposal suggests that one body could regulate the professional codes of conduct for all health professions.

Campaign aims to change the culture on manual lifting
Article Abstract:
The U.K.'s Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is launching a campaign aimed at reducing injuries to nurses caused by the manual handling and lifting of patients. It is estimated that 80,000 nurses a year injure their backs, with 3,600 of these forced to retire. The campaign to end manual lifting will be supported by three new documents, including a risk-assessment guide and a revised edition of the RCN's Code of Practice on the Handling of Patients.
