Motor vehicle accidents and TMDs: assessing the relationships
Article Abstract:
Many factors appear to enter into whether patients involved in motor vehicle accidents develop signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or masticatory muscle injury. Researchers reviewed records of 219 patients who developed signs and symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder after a motor vehicle accident. Factors associated with increased pain or restricted ability to open the mouth were speed at impact, impact from other than the side, looking to the side at time of impact, and female sex. Facial or head bruising or blunt impact resulting from the accident was not associated with increased injury.

Microarrays and clinical dentistry
Article Abstract:
A description of DNA microarray technology and its potential uses in dentistry is provided. DNA microarrays are small glass slides or silicon chips that contain hundreds and even thousands of pieces of DNA. The DNA binds to messenger RNA from cells, which tells researchers what genes are activated. Thousands of genes from a biopsy sample can be screened simultaneously and quickly.
